Why Mental Health First Aid?

Mental health issues are common and can be extremely serious. People suffering from mental ill health have a higher mortality rate than the general population due to suicide and other associated health issues. Like its cousin, (physical) First Aid, it is is there to do three main jobs:

Recovery from mental illness is possible and in many cases, diagnosis is the first step towards recovery.
Making a decision to talk to someone about their mental health can be extremely daunting. The desire to help may be balanced out by the fear of offence or confrontation, or even making the situation worse. This is natural and normal. Mental health has been stigmatised for so long that we don’t know how to talk about it.
Remember that showing someone that you care enough about them that you’ve noticed that there might be a problem can be an eye-opening moment for that person. Poor mental health can be isolating, and having someone reach out a hand of support can make all the difference in a bleak moment.
The two-day MHFA England course introduces the main mental health conditions that we’re likely to encounter in life, and gives participants the chance to explore how to approach someone and offer support and information that can make all the difference.
Mental health is one of those things we take for granted until...it goes wrong.

How common are mental health problems?

The overall number of people with mental health problems has not changed significantly over the years, but our willingness to get help and talk abou the topic, thankfully, has. Worries about money, jobs, even Brexit can make it harder to cope. It does appear that the way we cope with issues is getting worse, with more people self-harming or thinking about suicide. The good news is that intervention can help.
